A visit from the Handitards.

Posted in baseball, daily life, local restaurants, running at 2:23 pm by totaleclipse

As promised, a fresh, new-smelling post just for your consumption today.  I hope you enjoy it!  All 6 of you.

Last night Ray and Michael came up for dinner, and we went to Vickery’s along with K&M and the Canadians.  I had hush puppies to start (which were okay, not great, and not even CLOSE to the Glenwood’s hush puppies) and then the black bean burger, which is served with lettuce, chopped tomatoes and sour cream.  Very well done, too, I think it’s one of the better black bean burgers I’ve ever had.  It wasn’t salty at all, and therefore it could have used some onion or something to give it a little bite.  Otherwise, quite good.  All washed down with a Riff pinot grigio which is a flavor I buy for home sometimes and quite like.  We had a good time!

This morning Ray and I got up and went for a short three mile run.  Even that was trying for me, given that I’ve been almost exclusively running on the treadmill these days.  Yesterday I did four miles easy on the treadmill, which just happened to be in air conditioning and at zero incline.  It was nice to run with Ray again, that used to be one of our favorite activities together.  Then we showered and headed over to Thumbs Up Diner for brunch.  Although I really wanted pancakes, instead I got The Heap which is basically home fries baked in a skillet with green peppers and onions and some cheese.  Yes, in case you’re wondering, that IS a little better than pancakes (hey, I said “a little”) and I actually couldn’t finish it, so that’s something.  After our delightful brunch I dropped her off at the airport for her luxury vacation and I went to work.  Good times!

My knee felt fine during my run this morning. I think I’m in the clear, and will start bringing my mileage up again.  If I didn’t have a neighborhood public safety meeting this evening I would go to the gym again.  But, alas, such is life.  Keeping at it every day is more important than pushing too hard on one specific day.  I’ll stay between 3-4 miles per day for the rest of this week and then up it by a half mile to a mile for next week.  I need to get on it if I’m going to get under 55 minutes at the next 10K!

In baseball news, the Sox got swept by the Angels (proudly sporting a newly minted Teixeira, dammit).  As a lifelong Sox fan I will only say that although the extasies I experienced after they won the World Series were wonderful, even when they play less than stellar they are still the best team in baseball to me.  And I will also hope that they take today to get a massage, maybe visit the spa, and do whatever they have to do to shake this slump.  If that means getting rid of Manny, so be it!  He’s a great player, but he kind of brings down morale .

I have nary the time nor inclination for a post today.  My humble apologies.  I’m sure I’ll post tomorrow.  In the meantime, please figure out how to stop getting phone books.  Does anyone use them anymore?  The answer is: No.

My life revolves around food. Got a problem?

Posted in local restaurants at 3:22 pm by totaleclipse

Today I have made a wonderful discovery.  It’s a website called AllMenus.com and it has, like, all the menus you would ever want to peruse.  I plugged in my zip code and it came up with 955 menus in my vicinity.  Damn!  That’s pretty extensive!  Check it out, it will seriously whet your appetite.

I’m also thinking about Midtown Restaurant Week.  There are so many delicious places to choose from.  And depending on my mood, I change my mind hourly.  The other problem is wrangling in my friends to agree on a place and on the evening.  Not that they have to come, but it’s always fun to enjoy restaurant week with a group.

BOO!

Stuff I did this weekend.

Posted in daily life at 2:48 pm by totaleclipse

Hola, good readers of TEOTH!  I would like to take a moment to state that I am totally addicted to sugar free Life Savers in both peppermint and wintergreen.  Oh, sorry: Pep-O-Mint and Wint-O-Green.  Heh.  My lunch is not complete until I’ve had four or five of ‘em.  It’s sad, and yet, I look forward to it so much.

Did everyone have a nice weekend?  Hope so.  Mine was fine.  Friday night we went to beer club at Holy Taco which turned into a later night than what I’m used to, but it was fun.  There were a ton of people there and the servers did a really excellent job of keeping everyone’s glasses filled and keeping the tabs seperate.  I was totally impressed!  They also remembered all of our names; I don’t know how they did it, but it was cool and slightly creepy at the same time.

Saturday Dice and I had an easy, lazy day.  We did some stuff, and at once point Dice went up to midtown to go to Borders and Whole Foods, but mostly we watched TV.  It was magical.  Sunday I got up and ran 3 miles and, yippie! my knee felt fine.  Yay!  Then I went to see Mamma Mia! with the female half of the Canadians, M, and M’s BFF ML.    It was a really cute movie, I really enjoyed it.  You basically just have to buy into the cheese factor and just enjoy it for all of its superficial fun.  After the movie we went next door to Apres Diem where we all had a fatoush salad and a glass of wine.  It was a good salad, with darker greens (possibly arugula or romaine), eggplant, feta, cucumbers, and some other stuff.  Hit the spot on a warm day!  Later that afternoon Dice was hungry so we went to the Brick Store where he had the brat and I had the veggie and hummus plate.  Then back home again to watch movies and veg out.

Plans for the week include Handitard dinner and a couple other things.  Nothing too exciting.  As usual I need to eat healthy and detox from all the damage I did to myself over the weekend.

So, I’m still not reading Romola.  It sits on my bedside table, forlornly holding up the weight of the book I am actually reading, which right now is Rachel Ray by Trollope.  Yes, folks, after a brief foray into the works of other authors, I’m back on the Trollope wagon.  After I finish Rachel Ray, I’m going to read He Knew He Was Right, which I had forgotten I had until the other day when I saw it while perusing my bookshelves.  I’m just not motivated to read Romola.  I suppose I’ll get to it someday. Someday when I’m locked in a tower room with nothing else to read.

People are rude, but I drown my sorrows in food.

Posted in daily life at 2:29 pm by totaleclipse

Something that bothers me about people is the smaller ways in which they are inconsiderate.  When people do really asshole-y things, well, you get angry and you deal with it.  But people are inconsiderate in small ways 10,000 times a day, and you’re not supposed to get mad about it, or confront them, or anything.  You’re just supposed to shrug your shoulders and consider it the price we pay to live together on this crowded planet.

Take for instance the trend lately to have huge keychains with several different things hanging off them, charms, dangly spirally things, a light, maybe even a key or two.  Then you’re supposed to carry that massive key chain out, not in your bag or pocket, but out where it CLANGS and CLONGS and generally makes an incredible racket.  For no reason!  People do this just walking down the street!  Or at work!  I don’t care what you put on your keychain, but it’s rude to let it turn into your own personal noisemaker.  Thus you are saying that your personal space is much more important than my personal space.  Or people walking on the sidewalk.  People walking on the sidewalk never, ever make room for people coming in the opposite direction.  Like you’re just supposed to disappear so that they can walk down the sidewalk.

You can see how little things like this add up to extreme annoyance.  I mean, if people only did one small annoying thing a day, that’s billions of people doing annoying things every single day.  What happened to being polite?  And aware that you aren’t the only person on the planet?  Trust me, I don’t want to be around you any more than you want to be around me.   But you just made my day that much worse, just by being inconsiderate.

I imagine this problem is prevalent mostly in the U.S.  Although I’ve been to European cities where people are rude in much the same way, as well as more obvious ones.

In other news, dinner last night was fantastic, at least for me.  If you remember from yesterday, we went to Sear during Downtown Restaurant Week where expensive restaurants offer a three-course prix fixe for $25.  It’s usually from a limited menu, which is the trade-off.  Well, first of all the restaurant was inside the Marriot Marquis which had just undergone a $50 million renovation and last night was their grand re-opening, so there was a HUGE party going on in the lounge area, complete with a gigantic stage with a DJ and two dancers on pedestals.  So we pushed through the crowd to get to the restaurant which was comparatively quiet and not too crowded.  For appetizers we had the choice of wedge of iceberg or chilled garlic almond soup.  I got the wedge and it was perfect, very crispy and tart; Dice got the soup which he didn’t enjoy very much.  For entrée there were two choices: skirt steak with caramelized onion over mashed potatoes (skirt steak is when it’s in strips that are wound into a circle, kind of like an apple peel) or corvina with capers (whitefish).  Everyone who had the corvina (including me) thought it was delicious!  A little salty but it had some fennel and other tasty things.  The people who had the skirt steak said it was okay, but nothing big.  So this is reason number two why I’m glad I didn’t get the skirt steak. For dessert either a nutty cheesecake or a sorbet.  I had the cheesecake, it was very light and airy (which I like) and the nuts were SO good, plus there were nuts in a caramel sauce that covered it.  From talking to the others in our group, it was clear that the menu that I chose, iceberg wedge, corvina and cheesecake, were the better dishes of the choices.  And they were very tasty!  Plus the decor was very nice.  We were a party of 7 and they placed us at a table that could have fit 10.  It was nice to spread out but not very intimate.  However, there were some really cozy looking booths that would be perfect for 3 or 4 which I will hope to get next time.

Tonight?  Beer club at Holy Taco!

Nothin’ tastes better than prix fixe!

Posted in baseball, local restaurants at 12:38 pm by totaleclipse

I forgot my lunch at home today.  This saddens me inexpressibly.  Mostly because it’s not just lunch, but also my mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks.  Those snacks keep me going in between meals, yo.  However, I’ll just chalk it up to saving my caloric allowance for dinner tonight (which means, I’ll get lunch from the cafe but skip snacks).  See, this week is Downtown Restaurant Week, wherein participating downtown restaurants offer a 3-course prix fixe for $25.  Nice, eh?  So we’re going with a big group this evening to Sear (or, as the female half of the Canadians calls in, who knows why, ‘Sear’).  Which is a steakhouse.  But I’ll be fine, I’m sure they’ll have some sort of fish or otherwise non-steak option on the prix fixe menu.

YES, I was right!  They are offering a fish.  And it looks delicious.  Now the only challenge will be to actually order it, because knowing myself as I do, most likely I’ll decide at the last minute that I really want the skirt steak since I used to like steak so much in the old days.  And then it’ll come and I won’t be able to eat it and that’ll be 25 bucks down the drain.  Trust me, it’s happened before.

Ray reminds me that the Mets are in first place right now.  Of the NL east.  A distinction they share with the Phillies.  Still WAY better than the Braves; what a disappointment.  The Red Sox are half a game behind Tampa Bay in the AL East, but they are also third overall in the AL, so that’s something uplifting.  Not as good as first, but good enough!  See all standings here.

Nerds and geeks.

Posted in daily life at 3:56 pm by totaleclipse

Okay, so there is a difference between nerds and geeks.  It might be a subtle difference, or a difference that doesn’t manifest itself in an obvious way, yet it’s fundamental.  American society tends to lump geeks and nerds into one large category because they both look so, well, dorky.  I submit that their outward appearances are one of only two manners in which they are similar, the other being a single-minded interest in a topic or topics. However, geeks tend to lose themselves in sci-fi, fantasy, computers or the like, but still like to socialize with the human race.  They might be socially awkward, but they prefer to surround themselves with others who are also socially awkward share their interests, so it all works out.  Nerds, on the other hand, are characterized by interests that are more scholarly in nature.  The social skills of a nerd are more atrophied than non-existent.  Because nerds tend to be more solitary, given the nature of academia as an individual endeavor.  Thus they spend more brainpower on whatever their academic field is rather than the latest craze in fashion.

I could write a manifesto on the differences between geeks and nerds, but that’ll do as a nutshell description.  I feel singlularly qualified to delineate the differences since in my life I’ve dabbled in geekdom, nerdiness, and the general masses.  I grew out of my geek phase, thought seriously about being a nerd while in college, then discovered that booze is the great equalizer and ultimately went to too many frat parties to qualify for either category.  Dice says that my singular interest in Victorian literature qualifies me for nerd status, but I contend that he’s too much of a nerd to know better.

Still runnin’!

Posted in running at 10:49 am by totaleclipse

I guess it’s obvious that I have abandoned my July Challenge.  It was necessary for my long term health.  As I always say, running is a lifelong activity; there’s plenty of time to run that marathon at some point.  But you certainly won’t ever do it if you eff up your joints.  Lately I’ve been rockin’ the stationary bike and the elliptical, and not only is it keeping my fitness level up, but it’s really breaking up the monotony of running every single day.  Last week I did run a little too much and so this week I’m keeping the running mileage to fewer than 3 miles a day, no matter what.  Even if I feel strong (which I did last night) I’ll still get off and use one of the machines.  Also, I’m going to start weight sessions starting this week or next, just to throw that into the mix as well.

My gym is doing an initiative called the BX 100, where you’re supposed to run 100 miles in about 5 or 6 weeks.  I joined it before my knee issue, and it started 1 July.  The best part about it is that you can count bike or elliptical miles as well as running miles.  If you complete the challenge you get one month free membership.  I am totally rockin’ this challenge!

Last night I had a dream that Dice and I were running a half marathon. But we dawdled so much (mostly because of me) that we didn’t make it to the start until a full hour after the race had started.  Then the warden-like lady wouldn’t let us start until she gave us the say-so, but out of spite she didn’t give us permission until another half an hour had gone by.  It was frustrating, but we also thought about giving up.  Then I woke up and never learned if we ran the race or not.

Speaking of races, I’m thinking about an upcoming race.  In order to get seeded into the slowest corral at next year’s Peachtree (and I won’t run the Peachtree unless I can get into one of the seeded categories: a girl I know ran it with the masses this year and she didn’t cross the start until 8:50!  That’s an hour and 20 minutes after the start!) I will need to run a 10K in under 55 minutes.  Considering my PR for the 10K distance is 56 minutes and change, this is an achievable goal.  Oh, and did I mention I got that PR at last year’s Buckhead Sizzler?  Yep.  So I’ll run it again this year and hope for a better time.  Of course, this requires me to actually be able to run by then, heh.

Today is another 95 degree day with a million percent humidity.  Thank cheeseness for the air conditioned gym!

Runnin’ on empty.

Posted in daily life, local restaurants at 3:51 pm by totaleclipse

A successful weekend despite two extended highway traffic incidents.  Friday night we went to the UJoint with the Canadians and T&R, plus dogs.  It cooled off a bit, enough so that sitting out on the patio was very pleasant.  My aforementioned glass of wine was fine.  The nice thing about the UJoint is that not only are their wines not bad at all, but they serve them in very substantial wine glasses.  These aren’t delicate crystal, don’tcha know.  They’re heavy wine glasses that make you feel like you’re drinking something substantial.  While there’s a time and a place for delicate crystal, there’s also something satisfying about a fortified wine glass.  Also, I had the grilled cheese sandwich with tots.  Crunchy, tasty tots.

Saturday we went to Macon to visit the other half of the Handitards.  They have a very cute little house, and the city of Macon is indeed very nice.  We had lunch at a cafe that makes their own potato chips and also serves the MOST ENORMOUS pieces of cake.  Like, one piece of cake is meant to be shared by at least 4 people.  Afterwards we went to the Harriet Tubman museum which had an exhibit on the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. the Board of Education.  A very, um, thorough exhibit.  It was like the never-ending exhibit.  We also drove around Mercer which is where they are both working now.  Cute campus.  For Baptists, heh.

On the way home from Macon we got stuck in horrendous stopped traffic on 75 North.  Ugh.  I think it took us an hour to travel about 5 miles and made the drive home twice as long.  After we got home we decided to go to Stella for dinner, where I had the Tuscan Chicken entree.  Which is spinach fettucine with chicken and sundried tomatoes in a very light cream sauce.  Oh, it was very good!  I enjoyed it so much that I finished the entire plate, and I wasn’t all that hungry!  Dice got the pepperoni pizza, as usual.

Sunday we went to Formula 1 where there were new people who just joined our group.  Which is always nice.  This was the last race that happens at a decent hour; the next race is back to the crack of dawn.  I don’t mind, I’m usually up at that hour anyway.  On the way home we got stuck in even worse traffic on 85 south.  It took us an hour and a half to go two miles.  We know this because the backup started as we were on the on-ramp, and the next exit was two miles away.  Which took us an hour and a half to traverse.  Not to mention the fact that it was 95 degrees out and the air conditioning doesn’t work so well when the car is just sitting, so it was hot, frustrating and annoying.  It turns out that just past the exit we finally got to, they narrowed the highway from 5 lanes to 1.  Ouch!

This week marks a newly re-affirmed commitment to health for me.  Since before our trip to LA I’ve been very bad about my eating habits.  This has to stop.  So as of today my eating habits will center around whole, unprocessed foods, and not much of it.  My balance will be a couple of tasty dinners.  Since everyone needs a balance, the trick is finding out what works most effectively.  Some people need one treat a day, while others can save it for one bigger treat less frequently.  I’m of the latter variety, I can wait it out if I know that a big payoff is coming at some point.  This week I am having a fancy dinner on Thursday evening, so that’s going to be the payoff for the near future.  I hope it’ll be worth it!

Just because I like saying, “Noobs.”

Posted in daily life, running at 2:24 pm by totaleclipse

Yes, yes, yes.  We were good doobies yesterday and went to the gym and then went home and had our salads for dinner.  We are dog-watching for K&M as well, so we spent an hour down at their house visiting with the wee doggies.  Thinking about it on the way home, I’m more displeased with the organizers of Taste of East Atlanta for having the event end at 8:00 pm.  I realize that many people eat dinner between 5:00-8:00 pm, but I’m sure that many other people, like us, eat later.  Heck, even on an early day we never eat before 8:00 pm!  I adore Taste of East Atlanta, but they lost my attendance this year.

The highlight for this weekend will be tomorrow’s visit to Macon!  The Handitards will be reunited again for One! Night! Only!  Or, to be more precise, one afternoon.  I’m looking forward to seeing their new digs, and seeing Macon.  I’ve never actually been to Macon, the closest I got was driving past on our way to Savannah this past May.  Ray and Michael say it’s actually very cute, and I’m sure it is.

Today I stumbled across an Email Aptitude Test for Noobs.  Oh, how I wish I had had this to send to [insert the name of every person in my family, as well as a few on my friends] every time they sent me forwards, internet hoaxes, or complained that they lost money after sending it to a Nigerian prince.  Or, the worst by far, are when they SEND MESSAGES WRITTEN ENTIRELY IN CAPS.  The problem is, they’re your family so you can’t kill them.  In the future, I’ll send them the aforementioned test.  Which really isn’t so much of a test as a list of instructions.

I’ve decided not to run the Double Quick this year, which happens tomorrow. Although I usually run it every year, and in fact when I ran it last year I ran my PR for 5K distance at 26 minutes!  With the knee not doing so well, though, the last thing you want to do is race on it.  Also, I’m just apathetic about it, anyway.  And when you’re apathetic, you certainly won’t be breaking any records.  Just save your money and stay home.  I won’t race, but I’ll still take an easy run around the neighborhood.  It’ll be the first time I run on pavement in a couple weeks, and here’s hoping it doesn’t F-up my knee even more. Last night, though, I skipped the treadmill entirely and only did an extended session on the bike and the elliptical, and today, the knee feels much better!

I still haven’t decided where to have dinner this evening.  I’m open to suggestions, and/or company.  I can’t decide if I want to leave the village or not.  Either way, though, I’d like a nice glass of wine and something delicious to eat.  What else is new?
