Kashi lets me down. Alas.
A clarification: in yesterday’s post I described my skatewing dinner at the Glenwood on Saturday night as skatewing over asparagus and mashed potatoes. It was actually over rice, not mashed potatoes. But that does indicate how tasteless the rice was, if I remembered it as mashed potatoes.
Today I tried a new protein bar. As many of my readers know, I enjoy a protein bar every day at lunch, usually of the Luna variety although lately I’ve been trying all sorts of other brands as well. I recently purchased a Kashi Go Lean Roll, seen here (please excuse the cell phone camera):

Kashi Go Lean Roll
Now, I’m a fan of the Kashi Go Lean series of products. I eat Go Lean cereal every morning, and I’m always on the lookout for new Kashi products. Naturally I had to try the new Go Lean Roll when I saw it at the store. The other flavors offered weren’t as tasty looking as the chocolate turtle seen here, although frankly I can’t remember off hand what they were. Anyway, my report on this product is that not only was it not at all chocolatey, but it also wasn’t in the slightest bit turtley, nor all that tasty to boot. Perhaps I’m spoiled by the other protein bars which probably use more sugar and more chemicals. But this roll had very little flavor and it was really chewy, and not in the good way. I won’t be buying this product again. Very disappointed lunch today. I had to have an extra LifeSaver Sugar Free Pep-O-Mint just to compensate!
I’ve been dragging lately. As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve been tired and sluggish for days now. The status has not improved. I promise to stop complaining about this momentarily since there’s nothing I can do but ride it out and try to get more sleep. I did sleep well last night, although I had a terrible nightmare. I won’t tell you about it because it’s a proven fact that no one wants to hear about your dreams. No one.

A very Brawny weekend.
And rain it did, almost all weekend. We even lost power on Saturday afternoon for almost an hour. It was nice; not only do we really need the water, but it was nice to have a rainy weekend, it’s conducive to naps. Not that I managed to take one.
Friday night we ended up ordering from Dawa. By the time we got home from the gym and showered, neither one of us wanted to go out again. So we ordered way too much food since we were starving and not very smart. Saturday morning I woke up early all ready to run, but just when I was about to go out, it started to thunder and lightning. I’m pretty stubborn, and I don’t like to change my plans once I commit, but thunder and lightning is enough to make me change course. So I took Saturday as a rest day instead. Dice thought that none of the classic car owners would want to drive their cars to the car show, so we didn’t go to that, either. In the afternoon I went to Target and did some other errands in midtown before stopping at Apres Diem, where I had a glass of wine and read my book during the delightfully rainy and miserable afternoon. Such a treat! Then I went home and rested on the couch for an hour or so.
Saturday night the boys of the Commune had to go to a bachelor party at Ted’s Montana Grill. So the girls went to the Glenwood for dinner. And we had SUCH a fabulous dinner, too. Unfortunately I threw the weekly budget out the window, which I’m ashamed to admit. But it was worth it. We started with cheeses and charcuterie, three of each. Bill (who works there) then brought over a couple other cheeses for us to try that were delicious. After that I ordered the skate wing, which came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The fish was perfectly done and I was pleased with the dish in general. The only drawback was that the mashed potatoes were completely tasteless. And rather than taking on the flavor of the other things on the plate, it actually took flavor away from the fish and the asparagus. For dessert we had warm chocolate cupcakes with ice cream and strawberries. Mmmmm!
Sunday the rain stopped and I went out for a short run. Unfortunately the cold I’d been nursing all week hadn’t gotten better, and my lungs felt like they were underwater. So I cut the run short and went home, where I sat on the couch for about 20 minutes wanting to rest for a week. But I didn’t, instead I showered and went to the new brunch place in EAV, Calavino’s Soul Kitchen, with the Commune (sans Dice). The venue is really great, it’s in a space-sharing agreement with My Sister’s Room. I’ve never been to MSR because it’s a club that doesn’t get going until after I’ve already gone to bed. But they must clean the place every morning, because you couldn’t smell any smoke or stale booze or anything. The food was pretty good, but the winner for me is the dill Havarti mac ‘n’ cheese. Oh my cheeseness, it was awesome! The next time I go I’m ordering double orders of the stuff. I also had the fried green tomato sandwich which was fine. Nothing super crazy awesome, but I’d definitely order it again. The menu is really long and has lots of stuff on it. I kind of wish I’d ordered the special that Robin ordered, the peach cobbler French toast, only because it was a special and who knows when they’d have it again? But then again, as usual I want to try everything on the menu. Next time I’m going to get the biscuits in Cajun gravy (with andouille sausage), which the male half of the Canadians had, and he said it was good. Anyway, in summary, Calavino’s is fantastic, and you should go.
Sunday afternoon we went up to the Hudson Grille for the first Formula 1 race of the season! And it was super exciting because, with all the rule changes during the off season, all the usual winners were at the bottom of the pack, and the underdog Brawn won! Yay for Jenson Button!
Good weekend, but I’m still over tired and feeling run down. I think this cold I’ve got is stronger than I want to admit. This morning I could not get out of bed, no matter how hard I tried. So Dice and I slept late and went in to work later than usual. The extra rest was MUCH needed. Going to bed early tonight!

Forecast for the weekend.
I predict: RAIN!
Hi, folks! And a happy Friday to you all! This week has felt sooooo looooong. I’m sure the weekend will fly by in comparison.
We have not made a decision on where to procure Chinese delight tonight. On any other Friday night I’d say we should just order delivery, but it’s raining today and that means that every other person in this entire city will also be ordering delivery, so we’d be lucky to get our food by midnight. Then again, if we try to go to midtown to pick up food during Friday rush hour in the rain, we’d probably also never get our food. The answer: wait until 9:00 or 10:00 and then order.
Tomorrow we’re going to be busy. First off we’re going to some car show at GA Tech. We went to this same car show last year but it was the day before I ran my first half marathon so I wasn’t really paying attention, and then it got rained out while we were there. This year, although the forecast calls for rain again, they’ve apparently taken precautions and built or located a shelter. The show must go on! Next we’ll head to the Edible Book Festival in Decatur. Books? you say. Edible? Books you can eat? Why, yes! Books made out of CAKE and COOKIES. Yes, indeed. I need explain no further.
Then, guess what happens on Sunday? It’s the first Formula 1 race of the season! Words cannot express my joy that yet another F1 season is upon us. Ahem. While I’ll be glad to see the group again, I’m none too excited about having to sit through all those frickin’ races again. The first race happens in Australia, and with time delay the re-broadcast is in the afternoon, though, thank goodness. There won’t be a 7:00 am race for a few weeks. Can’t wait.

Chinese, anyone?
If you were going to order Chinese for take-out, where would you order from? I am not picky about Chinese take-out, and in fact I prefer the greasy fast-food type. When I go out for Asian food, I will always choose a fresh food Thai or Japanese place over fast-food Chinese. Or my all-time favorite, real Vietnamese food (which I cannot find in ATL, help!) using fresh veggies and made to order. But when I get take-out, that’s the time for grease. Lately when this mood strikes us we’ve been ordering delivery from Dawa, which is actually fine, I have no complaints. If we pick up, we go to Rice Box. But I’d like to hear some other options if there are any. Close by, don’t give me any of that Tasty China crap. I’m sure it’s good, but there’s no way I’m driving 45 minutes for Chinese. And my final necessity are dumplings. I LOVE dumplings more than many other things. Steamed, fried, veggie or meat. Dumplings!
The reason why I ask is because we don’t have enough money in our going-out budget to go out both Friday and Saturday nights, and since Dice has a bachelor party on Saturday night, that means we stay in Friday. Dice has been talking about Chinese for, like, two weeks, which means that now I want it! I am so susceptible to suggestion. Just like Monday when I read too much about pizza (the local food blogs are freaking out about pizza this week!) and just had to go to Fritti afterwards.
But enough about food. Since I’ve been a perfect angel food-wise since Monday night I’d rather not tempt myself until tomorrow.
In workout news, I’ve shaken up my routine quite a bit since it was getting soul-suckingly boring. I’ve been adding some circuit training moves and while this has cut into my cardio time, I think I’m reaping more muscle-building benefits than I had been lifting weights twice a week. One reason why I think this is because I’m so sore these days that I’m hobbled. I am literally handicapped. I wonder what my co-workers think of me as I hobble down the hall to the coffee station. I’m sure it’s fun to watch, but it’s oh-so-painful on the inside. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glorying in the fact that I’m using muscles I had neglected before and adding some variety to my workouts. My next goal is to add a yoga or pilates class at least once per week.

Foodie news and notes.
I read in one of my favorite Atlanta food blogs that Fritti has hired a new master pizza chef from Naples, Italy. Hooray! Personally I don’t think the pizza at Fritti could get any better, but this circumstance certainly can’t hurt one bit. Okay, I’m now going to stop talking about pizza because it’s detrimental to my self-discipline.
A disturbing southern tradition happens under my nose every day. Did you know that many southerners put cheese on their sweet breakfast foods? Like waffles and oatmeal? Well, it’s not really cheese, folks. The version of choice is the eponymous American cheese food. So every morning people like my able assistant (born and raised in eastern Georgia) make a bowl of maple and brown sugar oatmeal and then ruin it with a slice of rubbery cheese food product. I should state here that I’m not really anti-American cheese food. While I won’t admit that it’s actually cheese, I have no problem downing a ham and cheese sandwich using it on occasion. But I deny the idea that its proper place is anywhere even close to sweet breakfast foods! What a way to ruin a good waffle!
Recently on The Biggest Loser Jillian offered a nutrition tip about using cauliflower as a substitute for mashed potatoes. My first reaction, health fanatic that I am, was, “ew! when I want mashed potatoes, I want mashed potatoes!” But then I thought about it for half a second. I bet you cash money that if you pureed the cauliflower and put the right amount of salt and pepper in with plenty of milk and butter, you wouldn’t even know the difference. Considering you’re going to put plenty of milk and butter in it anyway, might as well at least substitute the potato part, right? It’s worth a try, at any rate.
Two businesses in my neighborhood are doing what I think is really remarkable and admirable. One business, My Sister’s Room, is really a nightclub. It doesn’t even open until 9:00 pm and is still totally dead until at least 11:00 pm every night. So another business, Calavino’s Soul Kitchen, will now be operating during the day for lunch and dinner, with brunch on weekends. GENIUS. Space sharing saves on so many overhead costs. I heartily approve. While I’m usually either fast asleep or ensconced on the couch during MSR normal hours, I will absolutely be frequenting the soul food stylings of Calavino’s. I hear the food’s really good, too, which is just icing on the cake.

A very poor running experience followed by stellar eating experiences which totally make up for it.
Welcome to a new week in TEOTH-land. A week which, technically, started two days ago, but I didn’t have time to post yesterday. My weekend was really good, I have to say. Friday evening I hit horrendous rush hour traffic coupled with highway construction, which made my arrival in Macon later than expected, but otherwise it was fine. It was perfect timing, in fact, because as soon as I arrived we headed off to the pizza place for the traditional pre-race pizza fest. We went to IVP right off the Mercer campus. Although the service was incredibly slow, it was worth the wait for such a delicious pizza. Ray and I shared the white pizza, which is one of those great pizzas with feta and other tasty cheeses on it. Then early to bed so that we could all get up and run the race.
Saturday morning we got up early and headed to the race start. We were running the Cherry Blossom 15K, and it has the distinction (hey, it’s still distinction!) of being the worst organized race I’ve ever run in my racing career. So many things were wrong. There were only 2 bathrooms and they were located more than half a mile from the race start. Do they not know that runners need to hydrate? Next, the 5K started at 8:00 am and the 15K started at 8:30 am, but the problem was that the start and finish were in the same place. So as we waited to start the 15K, all the 5K runners were running into us as they finished their race! VERY poor planning. Next, the 15K course went along a couple of pretty busy roads, but there was no signage or cones or anything to separate us from the speeding cars that veered off to the left to avoid us, almost hitting on-coming traffic from the other direction. Or they didn’t veer off to the left and instead almost hit US. The worst part about that aspect was that if we were just running on our own, we would have taken more precautions, run on the other side of the road as you’re supposed to, and other things. But we couldn’t do that since we were in a race so we were basically sitting ducks. And then finally (as if all that weren’t enough) they measure the course incorrectly and it was actually more than a mile longer than it was supposed to be! 15K equals 9.3 miles, but the course was actually 10.25 miles, which makes it more of a 16.4K race. As we came into the finish and I saw my time on the clock, my heart completely dropped because I could not BELIEVE that I’d run THAT slowly. Such a horrible feeling! I mean, I know I’m out of shape and all, but 1:36 for 9.3 miles is pretty bad. But 1:36 for 10.25 miles is acceptably slow. I don’t mind that the distance was longer, the other issues were much more important. At least I got a nice long run in, though!
After the race we waited for Michael (who won his age group) to pick up his pretty pink ribbon, and then we went to the Mercer cafeteria for breakfast. They had told me that the caf breakfast was good, and they weren’t lying. I mean, it was a caf breakfast, but it was hot and there was unlimited food for $5. I had crispy little tater tot thingies, sausage, french toast and two biscuits. The crispy little tater tot thingies were like a cross between tater tots and mini latkes, and they were definitely the best thing going on the breakfast bar. I would do a lot to have those again!
After breakfast it was time for me to head back to ATL. I encountered similar traffic and construction issues on the way home, makin the trip almost two hours (usually it’s an hour and ten minutes). I didn’t get home until much later than I had planned, and by the time I showered it was almost 3:00 pm and I was exhausted. So I laid on the couch for a little while in an effort to store up my energy.
Which I needed because Saturday night the Commune went to Kevin Rathbun Steak for Baby T’s birthday dinner extravaganza! We arrived around 7:00 pm and had drinks in the cozy bar. The wine list is long and thorough. Around 7:30 or so we were taken to our table, which is precisely when our reservation was for so points on punctuality. The Canadians and R&Baby T all had the dry aged steak for two, which they all reported was delicous. I can’t remember what M&K had. Dice had the NY Strip and he was the only person at the table who’s dish wasn’t perfect. I started with the asparagus wrapped in serrano ham, which was very basic and perfectly done. Then I had the Tasmanian salmon with green beans and a lemon beurre blanc. The green beans were perfectly al dente and the beurre blanc was very light, while the salmon was nice and salty with crispy skin. Very good! For dessert I had the special, which was a tempura carrot cake. Carrot cake very lightly fried tempura style, with creme fraiche. It wasn’t hot, but just warm enough, and although I would have liked just a touch more spice in the carrot cake, it was an interesting dish which I enjoyed. After dinner we all retired to M&K’s house to play pool and have champagne. We didn’t stay too long but it was an enjoyable end to the evening.
Sunday morning Dice did yardwork while I tackled house projects inside that were long overdue. In the afternoon we went to the Universal Joint for drinks and dunch. I had a very subpar grilled cheese sandwich. It was disappointing because there wasn’t very much cheese on it and the toasted bread had no flavor and very little char. Plus, when it was brought to the table it was lukewarm. The fries were crispy and hot, by contrast, so that was nice, although it made the sandwich seem colder by comparison. This is especially troublesome because the U Joint usually has one of the better grilled cheese sandwiches in town, so I was expecting greatness. But every place has an off day, I for one should know that. Then we went grocery shopping and afterwards returned home to veg out on the couch. Good day!
Yesterday was back to work. I woke up with a slight sore throat, and I was very tired, so it was a low-key day for me. Then I spent my lunch hour reading blog entries about pizza from various locations throughout Atlanta, and it made me STARVING for pizza! So Dice and I went to Fritti for dinner. It was bad because not only did it seriously cut into our weekly budget, but it was also highly fattening and all that jazz, detrimental to my personal goal of self-discipline. But I don’t regret it for a second. It was 75 degrees so we sat on the patio. I had the bianca per usual, and I asked them to add some salame to it, which turned out delicious because the salame was crispy and salty, but for a normal person (i.e., not a salt fiend) they might find it a little too salty. I, of course, loved it. Dice had salame and olives, and he said it was very good. The crust was perfectly crispy, too, and had good flavor. There weren’t too many other diners and the service was excellent. It was basically one of the more perfect dining experiences I’ve had. Then again, it always is at Fritti!
Now it’s time to pay for my bad behavior, though. Here it is Tuesday and we’ve already spent 2/3 of our weekly going out budget. There will definitely be take-out happening this weekend!

Hey, it’s still distinction!
Here it is Friday morning, and I’m thinking a mixed bag of thoughts about the first week of ChB. We went out more than we did during previous challenges, but we spent less. This means that my bank account grows while my ass, well, also grows. Exponentially. Furthermore, I’ve been switching up my workouts lately to relieve the extreme boredom, which means that I don’t feel as though I’m getting as good of a workout because I’ve been taking time away from cardio to do (parts of) circuit training. So on the one hand, I’m pleased that we successfully completed the first week of ChB, and on the other hand, I wish I was a perfect person with tons of discipline who liked to work out 3 hours per day and never wanted to go out to eat. Alas.
Tonight I leave Dice at home and head down to Macon. Tomorrow morning I’m running the Cherry Blossom 15K, along with Ray and Michael. I’m woefully unprepared for this race. I’ve mostly been running on the treadmill, so my outside running practice is down. Also, I haven’t done ANY speedwork (except last night) in a month or so. Plus my knee has been acting up again. This all means that I will be the slowest person in the race and will most likely have the distinction of being the last person to cross the finish line. DISTINCTION.
Tomorrow the Commune is going out for fancy, fancy dinner to celebrate Baby T’s 30th birthday. By mutual agreement we’re all ready for a really fancy dinner, after which all of our credit cards go on ice for the time being. I’m SUPER excited about the restaurant we’re going to, since everyone says it’s fabulous and the chef has won mutliple national awards, yada, yada, yada. Then Sunday should be a day of rest for me, complete with TV and grocery shopping. I expect it to be a fairly good weekend, my performance at tomorrow’s race aside. Which I’ll just look at as a weekend long run and stop stressing over. So there!

Challenge B: so far, so good!
We had a great St. Patty’s day outing on Tuesday. Probably the best that I can ever remember, simply because it wasn’t a St. Patty’s Day adventure, it was just a night out with friends. We started at The Nook, which is the new restaurant taking the old Prince of Wales space on Piedmont right on the park. The Nook isn’t open yet, but our good friend’s family had an invite to a special pre-opening happy hour event. They don’t have their liquor license yet (or at least they didn’t on Tuesday) so they gave us a glass of wine each and put out plates of sample menu items, of which we tasted all. The space has been redone beautifully, all wooden and cozy, so much nicer than the old PoW shaggyness. The food was quite good, I will absolutely go there when they open. Good cheeses, cured meats, hummus and wings. Also some sort of meat on a bone that is supposed to resemble a caveman-like leg of meat. I can’t eat meat on the bone but others said it was good. Sadly we did not get a chance to try the totchos, which are nachos made with tater tots instead of chips, but I will totally be trying those next time we go!
After the Nook we went to Six Feet Under for more patio time and more appetizers. SFU is almost always crowded, enough so that some members of our party (I won’t say who but his name begins with T and rhymes with “him”) state that it’s too crowded to be comfortable anymore. I’m not quite there yet, but it is true that you always have to wait, and sometimes you can’t even find a seat at the bar while you’re waiting. But I’m still reserving judgment for the time being. We still enjoyed a mountain of fried appetizers and many more drinks before packing it in for the evening.
Last night, not wanting to stay in, we went to the Glenwood for dinner. We didn’t get there until amost 9:00 because we’d had a late night at the gym, so the non-smoking side was pretty much deserted. This is disappointing because it’s impossible to convince Dice to sit in there when there aren’t any other people in there. He’d rather risk lung cancer and sit in the smoky side. Next time, however, I’m putting my foot down. Anyway, I had the black bean burger with tasted cumin and it was about as good as a black bean burger can get. I also had the fries, which are f-ing delicious there. We usually order the hush puppies as a starter but didn’t this time due to Challenge B. We’ve now spent $90 of our $200 allotment which is just fine considering Friday night we’re staying in and Saturday night isn’t included in this week’s challenge because we have a previously scheduled fancy dinner that’s being grandfathered in. Doing well so far!

Please roll Clip 212!
I would just like to state that I love Jon Stewart. I’m not really all that attracted to him, especially now, although in his younger days he looked better (which is saying a lot coming from me since I likey the older men). But his sense of humor is SPOT ON. This whole brouhaha over CNBC and Jim Cramer just proves that it takes really smart people to be really funny. Fart jokes are great and all, but they don’t stay with you like revealing time-specific ironies in politics and culture. So, in summary: Jon Stewart, I do not want to take you away from your wife and child, but I would like to be your BFF.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! This used to be a handy excuse to drink heavily in my 20s (because every other day I just drank heavily without an excuse), but these days it’s not really all that exciting. Dice certainly doesn’t care about it, but I think that’s just a cover to prove how Scottish he is. Last year we didn’t even do anything at all. So there ya go! Tonight, however, we’re going out for happy hour drinks with the Commune. Hopefully none of the drinks will be green.

Decisions, decisions.
Hot damn, the weather was craptastic this weekend. I’m using that as my excuse for only doing one measly 5-mile run yesterday morning. Hey, whatever works, right?
Friday night we had a splendiferous dinner over at M&K’s with the rest of the Commune. They always provide a great spread as well as the opportunity for us to chat ad infinitum. I stayed up too late watching trashy TV again, so Saturday morning I slept a little later than usual and then watched TV most of the morning. Dice had to work, so I was able to watch all of my shows that he doesn’t like to watch, and which had been piling up for weeks. So that brought the DVR total down. Saturday evening Ray came to visit, and we ordered pizzas from Stella and hung out. Sunday morning Ray and I went on the aforementioned 5 mile run, after which we went shopping at Altantic Station. In the evening we made veggie quiche and a stir fry for dinner, both of which turned out acceptable. Good weekend although I wish I hadn’t been so lazy. I did manage to scrub down the kitchen, so I was somewhat productive.
Yesterday marked the start of Challenge B, the Monetary Limit. Considering we didn’t eat out the entire weekend, I’d say we’re off to a good start. Although I’m realizing I have to think carefully about whether to include take-out in the monetary limit. Technically, it’s not eating out. But it’s also not food we purchased at the grocery store and then prepared ourselves. But if we bought a frozen dinner from the grocery store, that’s also food we did not prepare at home. Unless microwaving is what you consider cooking. Also, we didn’t include take-out in the previous Month of Moderation rules, because those rules stipulated only that we don’t go out to eat more than twice per week. But the Challenge B rules state that we can only spend $200 per week eating out, and they don’t say anything about eating prepared food at home. Further, the rules don’t even state that we have to prepare food at home at all.
Knowing myself, I’m wary of setting the bar too low right at the start of the challenge, perhaps being able to stick to it for a week or two, but then falling off the wagon, if you will, in which case I’ll feel like a failure. I’d much rather set it fairly high, get used to it, and then lower it gradually, thus allowing me to feel like a success every single time I lower it. Psychological, but it works. So for the first week/few weeks, we won’t include take-out as contributing to the monetary limit. Whew!
